We are all forever in his debt

2004-11-29 Stieg remains a dear comrade in the memory of all of us who were privileged enough to know him.
It is difficult to convey the connection between the two of us: Two anti-fascists who rarely saw each other, separated by thousands of miles of land and sea, but of one heart and one mind on all the points that really mattered.

In person, close-up, Stieg seemed larger than life itself. Full of intellectual energy and natural inquisitiveness, he could knowledgably discuss multiple subjects (in English) for hours.

I remember our first meeting. It was in Stockholm and began about midnight, and he was still going strong long after I was worn out. Perhaps one of my happier moments with Stieg was when I was able to connect him with Sarah Paretsky, the Chicago mystery writer.

It gave me a chance to repay just a small portion of that which he has given us all.

We are all forever in his debt.
