In memory of a wise and heroic anti-fascist2004-11-20 It's strange how you can feel so close to someone whom you do not meet face to face for years. My relationship with Stieg was just like that. How long did I know Stieg? More than twenty years but can I put a start date on our friendship? No, it's like he has always been there as a friend and comrade.
We first met at his request when he was visiting London on other business. Our meeting took place in a cheap café near Victoria station.
We fenced around trying to sound out each other's views and chatted for hours about fighting fascism, Sweden, where I had worked a few times in the seventies, and mutual contacts. Towards the end of our conversation we both made jokes and laughed at each other's jokes and I teased him that he was the only Swede I had ever met with a sense of humour that an English person could understand. From that day on we became good friends. Expo came, faded away and returned and today stands as what I hope will be a lasting tribute to this ex-army captain who found a good war to fight, in favour of democracy and freedom, against the twin evils of fascism and racism. My family extends our love to you all. Sonia, my partner, was always so impressed by this decent man and Joshua, our son, who remembers meeting these lovely people in London's Soho, where they bought him not one but two ice creams, in the weeks that followed the Copeland bombings. Lee, my son in Berlin, grieves for a fallen friend with whom he stood shoulder to shoulder on some dark and uncertain occasions in Sweden. We will all miss you. Salud!
